An Extended ISM for Globally Multimodal Function Optimization by Genetic Algorithms

    Get PDF
When attempting to optimize a function where exists several big-valley structures, conventional GAs often fail to find the global optimum. Innately Split Model (ISM) is a framework of GAs, which is designed to avoid this phenomenon called UV-Phenomenon. However, ISM doesn't care about previously-searched areas by the past populations. Thus, it is possible that populations of ISM waste evaluation cost for redundant searches reaching previously-found optima. In this paper, we introduce Extended ISM (EISM) that uses search information of past populations as trap to suppress overlapping searches. To show performance of EISM, we apply it to some test functions, and analyze the behavior

The mixed capacitated general routing problem with turn penalties

In this paper we deal with the mixed capacitated general routing problem with turn penalties. This problem generalizes many important arc and node routing problems, and it takes into account turn penalties and forbidden turns, which are crucial in many real-life applications, such as mail delivery, waste collection and street maintenance operations. Through a polynomial transformation of the considered problem into a Generalized Vehicle routing problem, we suggest a new approach for solving this new problem by transforming it into an Asymmetric Capacitated Vehicle routing problem. In this way, we can solve the new problem both optimally and heuristically using existing algorithms. A powerful memetic algorithm and a set of 336 new benchmark instances are also suggested. The experimental results show that the average deviation of the suggested solution method is less than 0.05% with respect to optimum. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. CARRIER-MEDIATED UPTAKE OF H 2 -RECEPTOR ANTAGONISTS BY THE RAT CHOROID PLEXUS: INVOLVEMENT OF RAT ORGANIC ANION TRANSPORTER 3

ABSTRACT: The choroid plexus (CP) acts as a site for the elimination of xenobiotic organic compounds from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The purpose of the present study is to investigate the role of rat organic anion transporter 3 (rOat3; Slc22a8) in the uptake of H 2 -receptor antagonists (cimetidine, ranitidine, and famotidine) by the isolated rat CP. Saturable uptake of cimetidine and ranitidine was observed in rOat3-LLC with K m values of 80 and 120 M, respectively, whereas famotidine was found to be a poor substrate. The steady-state concentration of the H 2 -receptor antagonists in the CSF was significantly increased by simultaneously administered probenecid, although it did not affect their brain and plasma concentrations. Saturable uptake of cimetidine and ranitidine was observed in the isolated rat CP with K m values of 93 and 170 M, respectively, whereas 50% of the uptake of famotidine remained at the highest concentration examined (1 mM). The K i value of ranitidine for the uptake of cimetidine by the isolated CP (50 M) was similar to its own K m value, suggesting that they share the same transporter for their uptake. The inhibition potency of organic anions such as benzylpenicillin, estradiol 17␤-glucuronide, p-aminohippurate, and estrone sulfate for the uptake of cimetidine by the isolated rat CP was similar to that for benzylpenicillin, the uptake of which has been hypothesized to be mediated by rOat3, whereas a minimal effect by tetraethylammonium excludes involvement of organic cation transporter(s). These results suggest that rOat3 is the most likely candidate transporter involved in regulating the CSF concentration of H 2 -receptor antagonists at the CP

Constraints on the Intracluster Dust Emission in the Coma Cluster of Galaxies

We have undertaken a search for the infrared emission from the intracluster dust in the Coma cluster of galaxies by the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer. Our observations yield the deepest mid and far-infrared images of a galaxy cluster ever achieved. In each of the three bands, we have not detected a signature of the central excess component in contrast to the previous report on the detection by Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). We still find that the brightness ratio between 70 and 160 microns shows a marginal sign of the central excess, in qualitative agreement with the ISO result. Our analysis suggests that the excess ratio is more likely due to faint infrared sources lying on fluctuating cirrus foreground. Our observations yield the 2 sigma upper limits on the excess emission within 100 kpc of the cluster center as 5 x 10^-3 MJy/sr, 6 x 10^-2 MJy/sr, and 7 x 10^-2 MJy/sr, at 24, 70, and 160 microns, respectively. These values are in agreement with those found in other galaxy clusters and suggest that dust is deficient near the cluster center by more than 3 orders of magnitude compared to the interstellar medium.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, minor changes to match version published in Ap

Miniscrew implants (MSIs) are currently used to provide absolute anchorage in orthodontics; however, their initial stability is an issue of concern. Application of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) can promote bone healing. Therefore, LIPUS application may stimulate bone formation around MSIs and enhance their initial stability. Aim. To investigate the effect of LIPUS exposure on bone formation after implantation of titanium (Ti) and stainless steel (SS) MSIs. Methods. MSIs made of Ti-6Al-4V and 316L SS were placed on rat tibiae and treated with LIPUS. The bone morphology around MSIs was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and threedimensional micro-computed tomography. MC3T3-E1 cells cultured on Ti and SS discs were treated with LIPUS, and the temporary expression of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was examined. Results. Bone-implant contact increased gradually from day 3 to day 14 after MSI insertion. LIPUS application increased the cortical bone density, cortical bone thickness, and cortical bone rate after implantation of Ti and SS MSIs (P < 0.05). LIPUS exposure induced ALP upregulation in MC3T3- E1 cells at day 3 (P < 0.05). Conclusion. LIPUS enhanced bone formation around Ti and SS MSIs, enhancing the initial stability of MSIs
